Procedure for Issuing and Renewing Digital Signatures

The personal Digital Certificate facilitates access to new e-government services that require user identity verification, ensuring the integrity of message exchange and the confidentiality of communication. Personal digital certificates serve as an equivalent to a handwritten signature, are internationally recognized and valid, and significantly contribute to reducing bureaucracy and improving the security of electronic transactions.

E-government in an academic environment includes, among other services, the electronic submission of course grades, access to educational material, access to international literature, receipt of certificates by students and graduates bearing a digital signature, data encryption, and the reduction of administrative costs.

Each member of the University of West Attica may obtain one of the following certificates:

  • Class A: Certificates stored exclusively in a Secure Signature Creation Device (SSCD), which is a cryptographic device with specific standards (e.g., USB token), and used for accessing systems such as the electronic Secretariat of UniWA or for digitally signing documents in accordance with the requirements imposed by Presidential Decree 25 / Government Gazette 44 / 25-02-2014 regarding the use of electronic signatures in the Greek public sector. Certificates of this category cannot be copied to another medium.
  • Class B: Certificates stored in any medium, such as locally on the computer or on a USB stick, used for services such as digitally signing documents (where a Class A signature is not mandatorily required). Certificates of this category can be copied to another medium. Installation on a PC is required for their use.
